Ultrasonographic findings of soft tissue lesions of extremities and buttock

Abstract
Because of superficial location, relatively low amount of adipose tissue, and absence of intervening bowel gas, extremities and buttock are particularly well suited for examination by high resolution ultrasound.
The ultrasonography may represent the preferred initial diagnostic modality for painful swelling, palpable mass and injury.
The authors analyzed ultrasonographic findings of 76 soft tissue lesions of extremities and buttock which were proven clinically, surgically or pathologically in Chonnam University Hospital. There were variable lesions in extremites and buttock
which
included forty benign tumors, ten abscesses, nine malignant tumors, five popliteal cysts, two synovial cysts, two myositis ossificans, two partial muscle ruptures, one cysticercosis and one muscular dystrophy. The most common benign tumor was
lipoma(N=22), which revealed variable echo findings. Thigh was the most common site of malignant tumor(78%). There was no malignant tumor confined to the subcutaneous fat layer. The ultrasonography was a useful modality for determining presence,
size,
outline, internal texture texture and localization of the soft tissue lesions.
